Six Communication Program reserchers present in South Africa

Six Communication Program researchers presented invited papers at the International Association of Media and Communication Research annual conference in Durban, South Africa July 16 to 19.

Slavka Antonova presented papers focused on Internet global governance and human rights issues, the participation of women’s organizations in the Internet Governance Forum, and on Antonova’s own experience bringing global experts into the UND classrooms via videoconferencing. Recent communication master’s program graduate Tetiana Vaskivska presented a paper co-authored with Kyle Conway and Richard Shafer on newspaper coverage of Muslim women’s issues in the Spanish press. Stephen Rendahl presented a study of press coverage of African winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. Richard Aregood and Richard Shafer presented a co-authored paper on new journalism models that can provide collective security for journalists covering potentially violent and dangerous situations and conditions in developing nations. Shafer and Professor Eric Freedman of Michigan State University presented a co-authored paper on the post-Soviet press in the newly independent Baltic nations of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
