UND Writer’s Conference

Hi everyone,
In association with the 2018 UND Writers Conference, the English Department has put together a series of panels called the Grand Challenges Symposium. The panels, running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, include one that English asked Charles Haga to assemble and moderate: “What’s News? The State of Journalism in North Dakota and Beyond,” at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Union Lecture Bowl. They’re going to talk about “fake news,” the effects of technological and economic developments on journalism, the evolution of new media and other issues.

Our department is contributing by making Mark Trahant and Charles Haga available, and by making it possible for Jim Fuglie, proprietor of The Prairie Blog and frequent commentator on N.D. energy development, environmental issues and politics, to participate. Other panelists include Kirsten Stromsodt, editor of the Grand Forks Herald (and a former instructor in the department); Mike Jacobs, former editor and publisher of the Herald, and Lorenzo Serna, a UND English graduate and co-creator of Unicorn Riot (https://www.unicornriot.ninja/about-unicorn-riot/).

We encourage you to participate this insightful series of events and meet real journalists. To view more information about the panels, see the Grand Challenges site: https://und.edu/orgs/writers-conference/current-conference/grand-challenges-information.cfm
